This year was my first year doing spring performances! When I was planning my performances, I wanted them to be different from the Christmas Concert. I wanted them to give parents a glimpse of what our daily music class looks like. So, I programmed it differently from my traditional concert and called it a Spring Showcase!
The traditional Christmas concert at my school features all the classes, from kindergarten to grade 5. The students come on the stage, sing their song, and wait in the classroom for the remainder of the concert. This was the first thing that I wanted to change when planning a Spring Showcase. I wanted the students to stay in the gym the entire time. That meant planning 2 concerts. One for Kindergarten to Grade 2 students and one for Grades 3-5 students. The Grade 3-5 Concert was themed: What will the Weather be, and we performed songs about all types of weather!

I wanted the students to stay in the gym the entire time. That meant planning 2 concerts. One for Kindergarten to Grade 2 students and one for Grades 3-5 students. The Kindergarten to Grade 2 concerts were Under the Sea-themed, a definite hit with parents, students, and teaching staff alike. Knowing the difference between high and low is a foundational skill in elementary music as it prepares students to sing in tune. Some students need lots of practice with the concept to be able to truly master it. So, in kindergarten and even the beginning of grade 1, it is one of my key and first lessons to teach.
But how exactly can you teach such a broad concept to elementary age students? My solution is to make it relatable to everyday life and keep them engaged by using different teaching techniques and instruments! In my TPT store, I have a complete lesson pack that I use to teach my elementary music students about high and low. It includes everything you need- lesson plans, projectables, and worksheets. Check out the lesson pack here! Apples are a great theme to bridge back to school and fall, which is why I teach Apple songs every year to my elementary music students. And one of my favourites is Way Up High in the Apple Tree because I can use it with multiple grade levels, in multiple ways.
Way Up High in the Apple Tree is often taught as a spoken poem, but I have added lyrics and a melody because you can bet I want my kiddos to sing as much as possible when we come back to school. I use this song with students in grade 1 to grade 4 and depending on the students there are 2 different skills we can work on with it. |
